A Compassionate Path Toward Healing Through All Parts of You
Ever feel like different parts of you are battling for control? Maybe one part pushes you to stay busy and productive, while another part wants to rest and hide. Maybe there’s a voice that criticizes you constantly, or a younger part that carries deep hurt from past trauma.
You’re not alone. These inner dynamics are more common than we realize—and they’re not signs of something being “wrong” with you. In fact, they’re reflections of a deeply adaptive internal system.
At Relucent Psychology Group, we offer Internal Family Systems Therapy to help you explore, understand, and heal these parts with care. Whether you’re navigating trauma, anxiety, burnout, or a deeper sense of disconnection, IFS therapy can support you in accessing your innate ability to heal from within. Here in San Jose, we understand the unique pressures of living in the heart of Silicon Valley, and we’re here to help you find balance and healing.
A recent study found that IFS therapy reduced PTSD symptoms by over 70% in just 16 sessions, while also improving depression, emotional balance, and self-worth.
You’re Made Up of Many Parts—And All of Them Deserve Attention
We all have parts—inner voices, emotions, reactions, and protective patterns that show up to help us function or keep us safe. You might notice parts of you that:
- Work hard to stay in control
- Avoid vulnerability or closeness
- Numb out or distract when things get tough
- Judge or shame you when you fall short
These parts often form in response to painful experiences—especially early attachment wounds, trauma, or identity-based harm. Even though they may be causing stress now, they were once trying to protect you. And in many ways, they still are.
Your IFS therapist invites you to approach each of these parts with curiosity, not judgment. Instead of trying to suppress or fight against them, we help you develop a relationship with them. As trust grows, these parts begin to relax—and space opens up for healing, clarity, and self-leadership.

How can Internal Family Systems Therapy Help?

IFS Therapy Offers a Unique Approach to Trauma Healing
Many of our clients come to IFS after trying other approaches that helped somewhat—but didn’t quite get to the root. If you’ve done talk therapy but still feel stuck in the same cycles, or if you’ve struggled with overwhelming emotions despite understanding them logically, IFS offers a different path.
Clinical research backs up these benefits. A 2021 peer-reviewed systematic review of 17 outcome studies found that Internal Family Systems Therapy produced significant reductions in PTSD symptoms, dissociation, and shame.
Internal Family Systems is:
- Trauma-informed: It recognizes how past pain shapes our inner world
- Non-pathologizing: It views all parts as valuable—even the ones that seem destructive
- Deeply relational: Healing happens through connection—with your therapist and with your parts
At Relucent, we often integrate IFS with other modalities like EMDR therapy and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) to support deeper transformation. For example, clients doing EMDR often use IFS to better understand the parts that hold trauma memories or block access to certain experiences. Similarly, during KAP sessions, IFS offers a compassionate framework for making sense of the material that surfaces.
By combining these approaches, we help you move from fragmentation and overwhelm to coherence and healing.
What You Can Expect in IFS Therapy
In session, we slow things down. You don’t need to have it all figured out. Your therapist will guide you in gently, noticing what’s present—whether it’s a feeling in your body, an image, a voice, or a reaction.
Over time, you’ll learn to do what’s called IFS parts work:
- Unblend from reactive parts like the inner critic, the anxious planner, or the numb avoider
- Connect with your exiled parts—those carrying pain, shame, or fear
- Cultivate internal safety, where all parts feel seen and supported
- Access your Self—the calm, wise core within you that can lead with clarity and compassion
Sessions are collaborative, not prescriptive. You set the pace. And we honor that some parts may need time before they’re ready to speak.
We also offer IFS-informed EMDR and KAP integration, which can be especially supportive if you’ve experienced complex trauma, dissociation, or difficulty accessing certain memories or emotional states.
Common Questions About Internal Family Systems Therapy
What if I don’t “see” parts or struggle to connect internally?
Is IFS therapy only for trauma?
While IFS is incredibly effective for trauma work, it’s also a powerful approach for:
- Anxiety and perfectionism
- Burnout and self-criticism
- Relationship issues and boundary challenges
- Grief and identity exploration
- Chronic shame or feeling “stuck” despite other therapy
Whether or not you identify with having trauma, if you’ve ever felt at war with yourself, IFS can help.
How does IFS work with EMDR or KAP?
The IFS model of therapy can help prepare your nervous system for EMDR or KAP by identifying protective parts and creating safety. During EMDR, IFS helps track parts that hold memories or get activated. In KAP, IFS offers a grounded map to help integrate the emotions, insights, or imagery that emerge during a ketamine session. Many of our clients find the combination of these approaches to be deeply transformative.
