Feeling Stuck in The Aftermath of Trauma?

Trauma can shape your life in ways you may not always see at first. You may appear calm, steady, or high-functioning from the outside while feeling anxious, disconnected, overloaded, or constantly on alert inside. You may notice:

  • Flashbacks or intrusive thoughts that disrupt your day
  • Pulling away from people, places, or situations that remind you of what happened
  • Irritability, anxiety, emotional numbness, or ongoing hypervigilance

Whether your trauma came from a single event—like an accident, assault, or sudden loss—or from long-term experiences, such as childhood neglect, complicated family dynamics, or chronic stress, its impact can linger long after the moment has passed.

At Relucent Psychology Group, we offer trauma therapy in San Jose and throughout California. We help you make sense of what you’ve been carrying and create a path toward feeling safer and more grounded. Our office sits near landmarks such as San Jose City Hall, the Children’s Discovery Museum, SAP Center, the San Jose Museum of Art, and the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum. Whether you feel safer with in-person support or online trauma counseling, we’re here to help you explore what your healing might look like.

When a traumatic event occurs, the brain and body shift into survival mode. Parts of the brain responsible for sensing danger become more activated, while areas connected to planning, problem-solving, and emotional regulation can feel harder to access. Trauma-informed therapy helps you understand these responses with compassion, rather than judgment.

Here, Your Pace Matters, Your Boundaries Matter, and You Matter

Local mental health data shows how many individuals just like you in our community are currently coping with emotionally heavy moments. Many people in San Jose and the broader South Bay carry trauma that hasn’t been talked about, named, or supported.

Trauma can stem from many kinds of experiences, including:

  • Emotional, physical, or sexual abuse
  • Witnessing or surviving violence
  • Car accidents or medical emergencies
  • Grieving the loss of someone important
  • Burnout or long-term stress
  • Early attachment wounds or emotional neglect

Trauma doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it shows up slowly, feeling drained, disconnected, irritable, or on autopilot. If something in your life has felt too heavy to carry alone, a trauma therapist can help you explore those feelings with care.

Ways That Trauma Therapy May Benefit You

You may find trauma counseling helpful if you feel anxious, overstimulated, emotionally numb, or easily triggered by certain situations. It can also support you if you notice patterns such as people-pleasing, withdrawing, difficulty in relationships, or relying on work, food, or substances to cope.

Living in a high-pressure area like San Jose often adds to the strain. Many people assumed they should “push through,” but minimizing your pain can make it harder to feel settled or supported. Trauma isn’t defined by the event—it’s defined by how your nervous system responds.

Your experience matters, and you shouldn’t have to navigate it without support.

What Is Trauma Therapy?

Trauma therapy is a supportive, collaborative form of counseling that helps you process what happened at a pace that feels manageable. Trauma-informed therapy emphasizes safety, empowerment, and choice. The goal is to guide you to understanding your nervous system, strengthen emotional regulation, and reconnect with parts of yourself that may have gone quiet during times of stress.

Our Approach To Trauma Treatment:

  1. Personalized Care Based on Your Unique Story
Your experiences, strengths, and goals shape the work we do together. Therapy moves according to what feels right to you—not a preset formula.

  2. Evidence-Based Modalities
Our trauma therapists draw from approaches such as:
  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): Helps the brain reprocess painful memories so they feel less charged over time, often without needing to describe the trauma in detail.
  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): Supports you in identifying patterns that may be keeping fear, shame, or self-blame in place.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): Offers a gentle way to understand and heal wounded inner ‘parts’ that may still be carrying pain.
  • Somatic Awareness and Attachment-Based Techniques: Help you reconnect with your body and relationships in ways that feel safe and grounded.
  1. A Safe and Supportive Environment
Healing often begins with feeling understood. Our San Jose office provides a calm space to slow down and breathe, and our online therapy platform offers a flexible alternative if you prefer care from home. You will never be pushed to share more than you want to. We follow at your pace.

Common Concerns About Starting Trauma Therapy in San Jose

I don’t think what I went through was traumatic enough to need counseling.

If something has affected your ability to feel safe, connected, or present, that’s reason enough to reach out. Trauma is about impact, never comparison.

I’m worried therapy will be too intense or re-traumatizing.

It is completely normal to feel cautious. Together, we’ll build grounding tools so you feel supported before exploring anything deeper.

I’m too busy to fit therapy into my schedule.

We understand how full life can feel right now. We offer flexible scheduling and secure online sessions for clients across California.

Do I need trauma therapy?

You may find trauma therapy helpful if you’ve been feeling like it’s too much, disconnected, or stuck in patterns you can’t quite shift or break. Many people seek support when they notice tension in their body, trouble relaxing, or a sense of being “on guard” even when nothing seems wrong. If any of this sounds familiar, it doesn’t mean something is wrong with you; it often means what you lived through was too much to hold on your own, and you deserve support.

What does trauma therapy involve?

Trauma therapy gives you space to understand your nervous system, build grounding skills, and move through past experiences at a pace that feels safe. We explore what’s been weighing on you, strengthen your internal resources, and reconnect with the parts of yourself that may have gone quiet during difficult moments. The work is collaborative and gentle, focused on helping you feel more steady, present, and aligned with who you are.

What are the steps to healing trauma?

Healing trauma isn’t a straight line. Many people begin by noticing how trauma shows up in their body and emotions, then slowly build safety, grounding, and self-understanding. Over time, you may find more choice, more clarity, and more room to integrate the past into your life in a way that feels less heavy. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s growing toward a steadier, more connected version of yourself, in your own time.

Do you take insurance?

We don’t accept insurance at Relucent. We know that can feel disappointing at first, so we want you to understand why many people find private-pay therapy to be a meaningful benefit rather than a barrier. When you pay directly for therapy, your care stays fully in your hands. Your information isn’t shared with an insurance company, and you aren’t required to receive a diagnosis for sessions to be covered. This often allows therapy to stay more private, flexible, and aligned with what you actually need—not what a policy determines is “medically necessary.”

Private-pay therapy also gives us the freedom to choose the length of sessions, the approaches we use, and the pacing that feels right for you, without outside limits on how many sessions you can have or which concerns we’re “allowed” to focus on. Many people appreciate having more control, more confidentiality, and more choice in their healing process.

If you’d like, we can provide a monthly superbill you can submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement, depending on your plan’s policies.
