1. EMDR Therapy
EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. It is mainly used for people that are suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), but individuals struggling with anxiety and depression can also benefit from this type of therapy.
What EMDR therapy does is identify the triggers that cause you to experience symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. A therapist notices what eye movement and body language you have in these situations.
They may ask you to identify what you are thinking about when these things happen and then help you gain a deeper understanding of why these symptoms persist.
For example, maybe you were in a car accident at some point in your life. Now, you hear a noise that sounds like cars screeching triggers a physiological and emotional response that puts you in a state of panic.
These are the types of things that you would work on changing your response to.
2. Emotion-Focused Therapy
This type of therapy can also be used as depression therapy and anxiety therapy. It has become widely used and appreciated as it focuses on people’s emotional experiences in their lives, and it helps people cope with their overwhelming emotions in a way that is easy to understand.
In 2020, the 18-25 year old age range had the highest percentage of people with a major depressive episode. That was 17% of that age group.
What this therapy does is try to work on building awareness of the emotions that you are feeling. For example, if you go in talking about your friends and family, maybe you can discover what actions they do make you upset.
You may realize that you value certain positive traits in other people more than you realized. The point is to get to know yourself better and use that to resolve the emotional conflicts that you are experiencing.
3. Couples Therapy
Finally, if you are part of a committed relationship, you do have the option to seek couples therapy. This is when you are in a relationship with problems or even just have sudden problems with another person.
When you think you are having a hard time establishing good communication with this other person, couples therapy can be a great way to start a dialogue. A therapist can give you both a platform to express yourselves and help guide you to improve your communication with each other.
