According to an article published by Eric W. Dolan titled, “Childhood Adversity Linked to Anxiety and Depression in Older Adults”, recent psychological studies support the research on children who had experienced adversity are more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression in their adulthood. In this article, the author’s main argument is that despite the kind of adversity a child faces, whether it’s neglect, abuse, parental dysfunction, etc., the effects are noticeable as the child reaches adulthood.
As many children begin their summer break, we encourage parents/caregivers to recognize the importance of bonding and quality time. Not only does this alleviate tensions and stress that children may be experiencing, but it can also boost their confidence and improve their social skills.
A commitment to developing strong foundational values for our youth sets them up for future success. Although all families express their affection and struggles differently, we can all make the collective effort to reinforce the importance of mental health at all ages. These practices reduce the long-term risk of depression and anxiety, and can be passed on for generations to come.
